Hey folks, Name is luke and i recently signed up with the Bast Alpha garrison in new orleans. AQs of yet i do not have any SW costumes, and am seriously considering doing a galactic marine for my first costume. While im not particulary adept at say vac forming, im am pretty decent with paint and leather, tho i have tried anything on such a large scale as far as painting is concerned. Right now its a toss up between an RC and a GM.
nice to meet yall

Not to discourage you but the Galactic Marine is a very tough costume to tackle your first time out. The parts are hard to come by at best, and a lot of it you have to make on your own. That being said, it is the costume I chose to make first too. I have been working on it for over 3 years now. This is a good resource if you chose to go GM, and we are here to help.
Welcome!

'Ello, Luke. First and foremost, welcome to the 53rd FAC. Secondly, thanks for choosing the GM as your choice of armor... though, with what Toyhunter said above. The GM is a very tough costume to take on your first time. The Galactic Marine was my first armor choice back in 2007, started working on it in 2008 and I'm still working on it. Not to say don't do it, just giving you heads up that it'll be tough since there are not as many of us as there are TKs...and it will cost a lot of $$$ since a lot of it is trial an error too. There are lots of great guys (and girls) here that will do their best to help you out if you have any questions on the GM. Always feel free to ask. We learn a lot on the armor from each other. I set up this page which should help you out as far as finding or locating items on the GM costume: 53rdfac.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=buy&action=display&thread=560Best of luck on your build and can't wait for the day when you say it's "finally troopable". No problem. Like I said before, always feel free to ask any questions. We'll do our best to answer as soon as possible. I also noticed you are debating working on a Republic Commando. RCs are also pretty cool. One of my best friends troops as RC 1138, Boss and has helped me out immensely on my GM armor. ...Just out of curiosity, I was wondering why you chose the Galactic Marine as your first armor of Choice?

Well, to be honest... because they look friggen sweet. I love the way the helmet looks with the cowl, and the option of actually being able to sit down is very tempting. That and i want to try making the cowl and Kama with leather as opposed to vinyl or fabric.

Welcome to the 53rd Luke. It's good to have another recruit on board. As was already mentioned, the GM is a very tough costume to make.It took me a year and a half to put mine together to the point it was troopable.I just have to change the right shoulder bell on mine and it'll be 100%.But of course I'm still making modifications to the fit for comfortability. And I just got done reworking the cheeks on the bucket,(helmet). It was my 3rd costume I put together.
On another note.I met some of you Bast Alpha people at C5,and was invited down there to take part in a few parades during Mardi Gras.If you could keep me in mind, and let me know some dates for this so I can start planning my trip I would really appreciate it. I'm in Garrison Carida in Pennsylvania. 501st ID is 3637.
Again,welcome.

Well, to be honest... because they look friggen sweet. Great Answer! Some Marines have tried Leather, and didn't like it but that was their personal reason. Due reasons like how hot it can get in it or after a while of trooping in can get heavy and slow you down. Also, cost. Feel free to try it you want, you never know if it will be the best choice for you. Unfortunatley, sitting can be a mission in it self once you add the back pack on, but in my opinion, it's still comfortable to sit compared to other troopers.

Feel free to try it you want, you never know if it will be the best choice for you. my guess is they probably used Upholstery Grade leather, which is HEAVY, tho it would look awesome with only some minor weathering. What id probably use is Upholstery Grade for the Kama, but Garment Grade for the Cowl, garment grade is VERY light,, tho it is pricey. On the other hand the average upholstry leather side is 35 square feet, So i should have plenty left over. ^.^ thanks for the feedback tho.

At CV,while riding the shuttle,I did have to take up 2 seats. One for my arse and the other for my pack and blaster.Other than that,as long as you remember you have a backpack on,sitting isn't a problem. At least not for me.
