I finally found a good base belt ot get started. I was at Wal-Mart today and found it. 2.5 inches wide and 42.5 inches long, white pleather. It was on clearance for $5.00! I think it will be perfect. I already got all the buckles and stuff off it. Now I need to figure out some kind of closer system and make the pouches.

You should look in the phone book for a Tandy Leather store near you (I think New York has one or two) because for the closer system, you can buy packs of button blanks, meaning, two pieces for the front of the snap button, and two pieces for the back of the snap button. You punch a hole in the leather, line up the two pieces and use a rubber mallet to hammer them together. I could show you exactly how to do it if you find the stuff and decide to go that route.
The thing with snaps is, you can put them ANYWHERE: they don't necessarily have to go in front. You could put two sets of two snaps under where the bigger belt pouches go so you don't see them.

So where should the seem go? I got the front buckles today and I have a closure system. Those who have finished their belt, did you hide the seem under one of the front pouches? This seems like the way to go, but makes it hard to close the belt. Put it in the back? Front middle? Any ideas?

I have been thinking about putting it in the back and trying to hide it under the thermal detonator like some of the guys over at ct.net do with their TC's. But I haven't really gotten there yet.

easiest belt ever: cut a 3 inch wide strip of cardboard long enough to go around your waist and tightly wrap it with marine vinyl using white duct tape to secure the vinyl. You can add either snaps or heavy duty velcro to secure it

Yeah but that isn't considered "cannon" right?
I am planning on using a US Military web belt from the Vietnam era. It is the one with the metal button latch on the front. I'll cover it in the vinyl and see how it goes.

sounds like a good idea
the 501st doesn't like to call BF canon, but technically it is. Tons of biker scouts are running around with mg-34s because its in BF (fyi, Biker scouts don't carry mg-34s in BF and taking 2 minutes to compare the guns makes that obvious)

Yeah, I hear what they are saying but I get sick of hearing about the canon crap. It's for fun, do what you like, you know? I will probably will put a det on mine, but I think I will have to come up with a better belt-fastening system, so I can remove the det later.

if you're doing it totally for fun then there's no reason to apply for 501st membership anyway.

True but Garrison's can be sticklers on what you troop in. Since I have my TC number right now it really doesn't matter to me one way or another. I will say I am going for cannon AND I am adding a thermal det on the back. Who is to say those Marines on Meegeeto didn't all use their dets before they killed Mundi?

yea, it really doesn't make a lot of sense that every clone but the GMs would have explosives on hand
