Good day ladies and gents!
I have been over due posting this WIP thread (has been ongoing over at CT.net for the past couple of weeks)
What I am doing here is building a new replacement helmet for the 2007 Con season. My first helmet (heavily modified Javamonkey V3) which is to left in my avatar, is a great helmet though, very heavy. In fact, I initially planned on Voltairizing an MR Basic, except they were having delivery delays, hence the JMv3.
This new helmet consist of an MR Basic, and a fanmade outer helmet as the basic elements for this modification and build.
Here is a group of photos highlighting the build process to date:
Base elements
Dome removed
Test fitting the outer helmet
Side view
Using heat to change the valances leading edge geometry. Because the outer helemt is technically a 3rd generation pull, I realized that I needed to add some mass to the outer helmet, for the right balance. The following pics from this point on illustrate the process:
Adding plastic. I have been uisng cheap "For Rent" signs. They work beautifully and effectively.
Helmet painted in first coat of black, for future weathring and scratch revealing, etc. Since clone armor is Plastiod, I am sticking with the black "underneath" the white theory. THOUGH, the outer helmet will be in silver underneath, to give it that real world steel helmet look. I will say the outer helmet is made from "Plastron". Ha!
Dome on helmet for analysis. Note first and second rounds of bondo work to the outer dome. I added a little less than 1/4 inch of build up at the brim area. I used stryeene rod to setup the correct distances and, as fill for the bondo. Kinda like Rebar.
Outer helemt is about 85%. I realized at this juncture that I needed to add a bit more legnth to the outer helemt.
Adding enough plastic so I can trim away until I feel the mass and scale are correct.
Excess plastic as been trimmed away. I am pretty much done with getting the mass and legnth up to snuff on the outer helmet at this point. Now, I need to do some plastic plating work on the inside of the outer helmet, bondo away all seams, then prime and paint.
