I have been making a VERY feeble attempt at building a vac table for some Imperial Navy helmets. During that process, I dished out the bottom of this 12 inch stainless mixing bowl. From what I have gleaned from this site, HS and SGB's buckets measure 10.5 inches at the base. This one would measure 12 inches. Bear in mind that I am dramatically larger than some of you so I don't think that this would be that much out of proportion to the width of my shoulders. Do you think that it would pass muster? "] Yes, that is a civil war mortar ball that I am using for as my round anvil.

After reading on this some more, It might not be such a great idea. The helmet in the references thread measures 8.5 inches between the ears. This beatsie would measure 11 inches ear-to-ear. Lotsa room for fans and stuff though. I think I'll look for a 10 inch bowl. 8.5 is a little snug on me.

And it is not only because of sizes but also about proportions. Because if I'm not mistaken, the bowl is symmetrical, it is a perfect circle, when it you need it to be an oval. I made myself this mistake with my first attemp for the helmet using a flower pot. After trying it on my head once removed from the mold, one of the many mistakes it had was that it was round, a perfect circle, when it should have been oval, narrower in the sides and longer to the front and back. So besides the measurements, the asymmetrical proportion you need is another factor to keep in mind. And another thing I suggest is to build it as small as possible. If you look closely to the pictures, e.g. the screencap with the marines shooting and Baccara in the middle, you'll clearly see that the helmet should be really small. By measuring the distance to the eyes and so, you get an idea of how small the helmet should be. Good luck with you search!
