I've been checking the 501st CRL and they still state that the back plate should be a regular clone backplate. Is not that I intend to "defy the council" but I really think this is not that important anyway. I did mine just like yours RKD, no box, just a plain plate, and there is no evidence that the GMs have a regular plate neither. But ain't it curious that they don't suggest or allow other type of plate, just stating that it should be a regular clone one? As published on the 501st: Back ArmorFor 501st approval:
Armor should be painted matte or satin white.
Rear tank has detailed area that contains 4 circles. Under the circles at the left side of the back there should be two parallel lines and the the right of the back there should a be a squared detail.
Chest and back plate should match together at the sides with no gap, just a seam line.
Shoulder straps should be placed underneath the chest to connect to the back. www.501st.com/databank/Costuming:GM_GalacticMarine

Thanks for that info TF. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I supposed I could always add the box to the back if needed (simply a separate mold so no big deal there) but the council has been known to reverse/change their guidelines in light of new accurate information. It may be just a matter of bringing that picture I posted earlier in this thread to their attention

I looked at this and the CRL is incorrect, they stated that the back armor should be painted "matte or satin white", we know that it is the wine color.

The CRL is not that well put in general. I wonder how we could get in touch with LFL artists that worked with this design and make an interveiw with them. Not necessarily begging for pictures but maybe have some questions answered.
I have quite some observations I'd like to have verified from official sources.
regarding back plate and the clone trooper detailing underneath the backpack.... evo3 also completely covered that detail iirc. So this part cannot be of any importance for this trooper as I knwo his wife or another female known to him has registered with such a gear.
I'd propose reworking the CRL entirely. Some phrases are misleading, some even wrong. But that is something belonging to CTN not 53rd FAC being an independent platform.

Maybe someone can get the ball rolling on this?? I don't have the time to dedicate to something like this, but I can contact Brian as well and let him know what we're discussing here and proposing.

Not to mention the back plate is the wine color not white.

Got a little more progress for you all. I was still really nervous about this backpack sculpt and felt like I was paddling down uncharted territory (which I was...for me at least) due to the size and shape of this mold. This is by far the most complex and complicated piece (forming-wise that is) that I've ever set out to do and I really didn't know if it was even going to work until I did a few pulls... everything up until that point has been strictly theory not to mention this piece is so tall and deep as well as oddly shaped for a pull that webbing and stretch of the plastic was certainly a major concern. Honestly I thought I was taking a huge risk and wasting a lot of time and resources on this but I had to at least try and see what would happen....and boy am I glad I did and I'm glad to say that I'm super pleased with the results. Not only was I worried about getting it to form, but I also didn't know if this funky shape was going to allow me to release the plastic from the mold. Happily, my theories on the angles were correct (either that or I just Forrest Gump'd my way through this one lol ) and the mold practically fell out of the plastic My biggest reason for making the frame in one piece was for easier assembly and for strength and I really hope that I have achieved this as well as keeping it as accurate as possible (being super anal helps too ) Take a look at the pics below as well as the side by side 'paint' photo I assembled and let me know what you think. Keep in mind that this piece is still in the early stages and there are a few things I still need to do to it to tweak it a bit, but I think for the most part the shape is correct. Enjoy! Obviously I still need to make the outer 'floating' pieces and this is just the under frame, but this side by side will explain things better than I can with words I've still got those 'floating' pieces to sculpt (and they really shouldn't take long at all) but at least the hardest part is behind me now (relatively speaking ) Here's a few shots of the mold As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned!
