First and foremost, I would like to commend and salute Nathan Lim (Heatshock) on his original sculpt of the Galactic Marine helmet, and offering these lids to our members. This helmet is absolutely fantastic and very accurate. Been working on this helmet for a little while, and really wanted to post up my WIP for quite some time, but have not got around to it. I have been taking my time with this build, for this will be my masterpiece. Started off by trimming the excess off, and decided to keep the neck ring ( 3/4" width). Using epoxy putty and Bondo, filled in and smoothed out the "hard" portion of the cowl and worked on the symmetry of the overall helmet. An absolutely amazing slush cast. I am really picky when it comes to my buckets -- whether it be on the inside (someone looking over the helmet and them looks on the inside, or the outside appearance (most important). Only had to do a little sanding / leveling on the inside. Next, trimmed out the back vent but noticed it was off / crooked. So measured from the bottom base of the helmet ( Blue) to the bottom of the vent -- around the entire helmet = 10 1/4". Then rebuilt and remolded the vent, and kept it at 1" width ( Orange), again using the helmet base as the point of measure. Now that the vent was cut out, I noticed that the weakest points in the helmet were in the "temple" areas on each side of the helmet. In order to strengthen my helmet and make it more rigid and durable, I applied some fiberglass and resin on the inside of the helmet -- right around the "temple" areas (location shown with the gray in the next pictures). While on the inside of the helmet, decision was make to use Bondo to fill in and level off around the eyes. One problem that was experienced with my SGB helmet was the installation of the lenses. Because the eyes tapered up, had to build a dam of hot glue around the "eye sockets" to get the lenses secured. This time around, filled around the eyes, smoothed and sanded out them out -- so now the lense will lie flat and should be easily installed, or removed (if needed). More pics to follow showing the inside of the helmet, which has been painted black. ......So.....I'll see your post....and raise you an update...Currently, the shroud has been painted a satin white, and the final coat of Rustoleum claret wine has been applied to the helmet. Eyes have been carefully trimmed out. 9V battery mounts have been installed on the inside (back) of the lid, along with a toggle switch. Small centrifugal fans have been ordered and should be arriving any day now. Also, going to install the vent screen next.

Thx for compliments mate. I realise there are issues to sort out, glad tbey were at least relatively easy to fix.
Would u recommend the extra fibreglass reinforcements in all helmets? Easy enough for me to do it in the shop?
Cheers for wip mate

Easy enough for me to do it in the shop? Cheers for wip mate Nate Even the best helmets ( like the Heatshock ), props, and fan sculpts which are slush cast in reisn need to be refined, fine tuned, and "polished". Besides that one of the most fun parts of the build. And all new sculpts tend to have some small "bugs" to be worked out. I would indeed suggest some extra fiberglass reinforcement in the temple areas of the lid. The small problem I see arising is when the eyes and vent are all trimmed out. As you can see in the pictures below the only areas which are keeping the helmet intact & from being separated into two (2) pieces are the [glow=red,2,300]temples[/glow] (next to the eyes) and the [glow=red,2,300] nose bridge[/glow] (right between the eyes). Again, just pointing this out and it is a simple fix.

I know what you mean mate. I actually prefer when I can do a bit of work on a bucket. The wonderful sculptors and artisans in our hobby do not have fancy production line injection moulding machines or anything. They are dedicated fans who create these out of love for the hobby, not monetary gain. When I get a bucket and there are a few air bubbles in it and flashing to clean up I get to put some of 'myself' into the finishing of the helmet. In that way I take true possession of the piece. It's all very symbiotic. If we didn't have great talents like Heatshock, SGB, EVO3 and all the rest where would we be? Rubies. ~shudder~ You are off to a cracking start and your advice from your build is going to make future Heatshock buckets even better than they are now. Good on ya mate. Soon...

Just happy u guys are willing to work on the kits and wearing em w ur costumes! Dyl, unfortunately ur lid is already packed, but will try other reinforcements on later kits going out. Thx for feedback too, should make for a better v2 hs gm lid

I cannot bear to see the lid be rough housed and " destroyed", I have to walk away.

I think the Marines are more likely to take their helmet off when taking a shower than using a shower cap! Outstanding work Ken, just outstanding. Congrats for it man!!. I love all the fine trimming you are doing and specially how the cowl is perfectly attached to the faceplate with no wrinkles at all. Just amazing. And the weathering looks amazing too: that "recesed" damage that can be seen it's just awesome. Congratulations Ken.

Alas, after close to one (1) year of building this helmet, it is FINALLY complete. And now I can once again troop my Galactic Marine. Keep in mind this helmet does not have a black undercoating, rather the helmet was actually scraped and gashed --- what I call "curb" weathering. Then black acrylic paint, straight up, was applied, and then wiped down with dirty rags. Once satisfied with the weathering, applied flat clear coat spray paint sealant. The shroud was installed in two (2) pieces, with rare earth magnets holding the two (2) pieces together on the sides. The "ash" that was applied to the bucket was Rustoleum gray stone paint. Gives a flecking effect, and the look of ash falling on the helmet --- straight off of the planet of Mygeeto during Order 66.Here is a view from the inside of the lid. I am very particular about all aspects of the bucket : interior, exterior, weathering, etc. Took some ideas from Beserker and other members, that is what is great about this group. Installed two (2) centrifugal fans: one fan bringing fresh air into the bucket and the other exhausting hot air (breath) with two (2) separate switches.

Midniterider i thank you for sharing this and for assisting to regain my mojo . If there is anything I can do to help or assist you and any other members, please don't hesitate to contact me. Trust me, this helmet was a long work in progress, but I love the look of the HS helmet, and I was determined to "nail" it and make it a masterpiece. At times, I was concerned that I would not complete it, but my motivation was the promise that I made myself. I told myself that I would not troop the Galactic Marine until the new lid was complete. Don't lose focus! All you have to do is look around this great website, at past and present WIP's. There is a lot of great ideas, tips, and knowledge! And if anyone is interested, I have and can duplicate the "first" (need to check with Nathan Lim / Heatshock for verification ) shroud template for the HS helmet. It is a template and would need to be adjusted and "fine tuned" to your liking.

wow man!!! that looks brilliant! the more I pull the lid, the more I realise there are faults that need correcting and fine tuning - any insight would be appreciated man (there is a thread - 53rdfac.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=helmet&action=display&thread=848)Soz for all the extra work required, but you have MOST definately nailed it! As for the shroud template - its completely your work man! do with it what you will - no problems. Let me be the 1st in line to say - YES PLEASE SIR! Could I also ask a favour - I collect the pics of completed lids and costumes with people wearing my lid, do you mind if I grab some images? Great job mate! Nate
