I didn't see a separate topic for this, so....
What does everyone suggest for boots? I saw the various opinions on shoes vs. boots to convert. We definitely need something with an aggressive tread (unlike a normal clone boot), and I think a low cut shoe would give us more flexibility than a higher boot. From the basic shoe we can then add armor on top of the shoe (and cover the laces), and tie any shin armor over the heel area.
Anyone find any other good boot sources?

I picked up a pair of hiking shoes/ "Doc Marten" looking things from Walmart today. They have a much thicker sole than the ones above, except that the shoe is brown and the sole is black. For $14 I'm willing to mess around with these a little. Has anybody had luck painting/dyeing fake leather shoes like this? I'm afraid spray paint won't last long. I will post pics tomorrow of what I found.
Obviously I would still need to make the foot armor and tie the shin armor into them.

The boot needs to go into the bottom of the shin armor, so cover the boots in vinyl so you have a taller boot. I'm quite exhausted from today, so give me a day or two and I'll throw up my GM boot tutorial.
Oh and please, PLEASE do not go the route BSN is taking and focus on the sole. That' is the least important part. No one is going to look at them. No one. Not saying it's not important for accuracy, but you should concern yourself with the body of the boot and how the ankle meets the shin armor. In searching for an accurate sole, you're going to waste your time and not get anywhere fast. So you'll have to take some liberties, but in a stuffy, bulky, awkward costume, comfort should also be a priority.
Again, give me a day or two to whip up my boot tutorial and you'll see how I went about doing the boots.

Cool, look forward to it. The only thing about the sole I am focusing on is an "aggressive" sole as compared to the flat soled shoes the regular clones wear. Depending on how I do my shin armor, I may opt out of any upper section on the boot and cover my lower leg and ankle with plastic. My biggest concern is that I would like to start with a "white" shoe so that the exposed areas will look consistent, and I am afraid that most coloring methods (paint) will not survive the wear and tear of trooping.
As for converting the shoes to high boots, I am in the process of doing a set of biker scout boots for my wife and the tutorial for them at BSN has been very helpful.

These are the Walmart $14 boots I found. As you can see they need to be recolored. Besides the price, I found them in 12-Wide! I also need to figure how to do the foot armor and tie the shin armor into these. Looking forward to your tutorial.

Those will work fine. No need to recolor, actually (well, except for the soles) - my tutorial is based on the TB boot tutorial, so you'll be covering the boot in white vinyl if you go my route. I was busy today, so I'll try to whip up the tutorial tomorrow.

I'll be interested to see. Like I said I'm in the middle of doing a pair (of TB boots) for my wife and it seems rather straighforward, not hard at all with some pushpins, scissors and a heat gun.

Those look great! You'll want to remove those buckles from the sides of the shoe before you get to work, though. They might prove to be problematic if you use my tutorial.

I found them! They are not kenneth cole (which i found, but lost the auction, damn!) they are sheckers but the sole is quite similar. The problem is they are small, so i'll have to work on the toe.
