yeah, if there was an addition to the faceplate it would look better. it would make it more even and not so much like its pulled tight. theres got to be a fabric thats in between.

My friends & I are thinking about using some super-thin white leather (we will be working on a small GM group project, consisting of 4 more GM's to be added to the 53rd).
I'll post some pics as soon as we get to work on these (which won't be for a few more months).

Wow, glad everyone likes this idea. You nailed the only problem though, I definitely want to extend the face plate down and out slightly, particularly in the center, so that it makes an appropriate shape before falling straight down. Any suggestions? I thought bondo would work, never used it, then I got some and realized I need something bulkier. This material is just a simple white undershirt that I had lying around. Looks nice in the picture but in person it's kind of obvious that it's just a t-shirt. I hope to play around with a better material soon. Phil

I went to Tandy the other day looking for some other stuff and found some decent deerskin leather that I think might work for the cowl. Too bad I already did the vinyl on my bucket. Wonder how much of a pain it will be to take it off....

Bought some bridal silk for the cowl. Still in the test-fitting stages, but am convinced it is better than vinyl.
Only trouble right now is the fretting ends. Vinyl is such a dream when making straight and smooth edges, this fabric is trickier.
Should have pics soon, probably end of the week.

Hey folks, I included info on the cheeks in the 'cheeks' thread in the helmet forum. More info also in "My GM Build" in the armor forum. As for the silk vs. vinyl. Right now the only advantage is that I can look down. The silk still bunches up like the vinyl but it doesn't push the helmet up off my head when I tilt my head downward. The drape is too tight and you can see it coming up under the 'beak' form under the cowl. I plan to experiment with either cutting away some of the cowl behind the cheeks to relieve that tension, or to maybe cut the cowl differently to get it to behave more like the film versions. The helmet LOOKS really nice IMO. But when wearing it it just doesn't behave properly. Phil

Can you get some pics of it on with the chest armor so we can see what it looks like? I am waiting until you work out all of the bugs before I change out my vinyl.

I'll have some pics by Saturday as we have a St. Pat's parade. I may take some sooner depending on how the costume is coming along lol
I'm really thinking that adding wide, drooping bit of silk from 'ear-to-ear' might help achieve the right look. The trick is not to have it bunch up TOO much, we'll see.
Amen on making these things that never existed. I was telling somebody that the ideal material would be a really thin white rubber or something.

What about a garment grade leather?

The problem with garment grade leather is that it can't look grainy at all. Can you find leather that is thin & smooth like vinyl?

That deerskin looks real good. I think it might be exactly what we are looking for. I would have to see it in person to make a final opinion but the picture looks good.

Yeah, I'm going to call them on Monday to see if they can sell me a small sample of that stuff.
