Since the standard GM figure has not come out yet, I have yet to get one so I was wondering if ANYBODY who has a GM has at least a backplate completed could post some pics...I would really like to see what everyone's personal backpack looks like and if anyone has a figure yet, could you post a pic of the figure's back please?
I was thinking about the making the ENTIRE backpack out of leather and dying it white (tandy leather makes WHITE leather dye) so it could be heavy enough where it wouldn't fall off (i.e. too light) but light enough where I won't feel like a real soldier with a 50-100lb. pack...The other reason that I want to do the GM backpack completely in leather is so it will be fully-functional (as a backpack) so I can keep clothes for a convention weekend or a drink or something like that with me when I troop in it...

s48.photobucket.com/albums/f239/torso_boy/GM%20backpack/Here's my backpack. I did some very close studying on the screenshots to build it. The only things I need to fix are the height at which I wear it, and the length of the cannister. Then I feel I'll have an accurate backpack. But that's just me. One thing I need to work on this year is definitely the wearing height issue. It need to be raised up on my back by a good 4 inches or so, so I'm considering making my harness just come out above the backplate instead of through the backplate. Then it should be pretty good. It's a fairly heavy backpack, and I recommend a harness, even if you're going for a super light pack. It will take the strain off your backplate. Anyways, like I said, my pack is pretty heavy. It's constructed around a custom-shaped cardboard frame, and it's primarily held together with duct tape, very long bolts, and zip-ties. The pouches and "top pad" are made out of foam (wrapped in ducttape for better shape) and covered in white vinyl ('cept for the bottom pouches, which are wrapped in tan vinyl). Shadow, how thick will your leather be? The reason why I chose vinyl is because it's very thin and very light, and you can stretch it somewhat. Plus it goes through seweing machines wonderfully, so if you need to sew anything for your backpack, the vinyl would be an excellent choice.

I completely understand why you used the vinyl, but if you go (just to look around) at a tandy leather store (they ARE hard to find but I have one near me) you can get leather just a LITTLE thicker than paper...You don't sew leather though, you stitch it...The only down side (for me anyways) to doing a leather GM backpack is that leather has to be handstitched unless you have a stitching machine (which is expensive and I don't have), but I will be able to make it look pretty good...But not perfect...I will add some pics of a couple Jedi-style pouches that I made from MY OWN design out of leather...They look good, but since they don't look perfect (brand new type of look) you don't have to weather them much, they kind of already look that way... Also, if you remember from either earlier on here (53rd site) or on ct.net, I have been talking about a strapping system UNDER my armor (and possibly also under my undersuit)...Well, I will add a few extra (like 6 or more) on my back that I will use to attach the backpack to instead of to the backplate...Like you said, less strain on the backplate...I will still REST on the backplate, but it won't be attached there...I haven't done a schematic/design (finalized at least) for my strapping system that I will use, but in terms of the GM backpack, the strapping system that my armor will attach to (each piece separately) will also double as a harness system for my backpack...(assuming that I make the backpack light enough )

VERY impressive on the rucksack Vod! Now I think it will be easier to build then I first thought. How do you get the back plate on with the rucksack on.......how does it attach through the backplate? Quick release snaps?

Ive threaded the straps of my backpack through the back Armour piece and attached to a 4 point harness,
2 round the waist and 2 straps over the shoulders
goes on easily like a normal rucksack does

I was thinking it was that easy. Did you cut extra holes in the back of the armor to accomodate teh straps?

yes ive cut slots , only just big enough to thread the strap through
2 virtical for the waist at the lower back and 2 up high horizontal for the other 2 shoulder straps
I havent really seen any GM's trooping without backpacks , so its not going to show anyway
and im using a tk back piece at current as im not sure it will make a difference

That makes it all seem easier to do. Has anyone ever noticed the TK backpiece? I guess you don't see too much of it anyway huh? Thanks for the info.

we can get away with useing a tk back plate?? A TK would not work. The GM chest and back link up at the sides to form a fully enclosed upper abdomen armor just like the normal clone armor. If you want your GM to be accurate, you'll need to link your chest and back together at the sides. A TK backplate simply does not forward enough. Plus, the "sides" of a TK backplate are very short and will not match up to the length of the GM side.

TB's right. There are the differences that he mentioned, but if you have a TK backplate lying around, you could try to mod it with scrap plastic and bondo

The is NO WAY IN HELL my sides will ever meet up no matter what plates I use. Yet my GM will still be accurate.
But theres no reason a TK back plate couldnt be used if it was properly modified.
