ok so i've decided to make a GM, but still trying to learn what all is needed. so from what i gather, a GM has grey bdu pants modified? but from what i have seen in the movie, its not really grey. or is my tv color way off? are BDU pants ok to use if modified?

it's like a greyish tanish khakiish color from what I've seen and it's all kind of subjective because of the crazy lighting affects in their one scene, grey is just what most people agree on. BDU pants should work if modified. You best best is just to keep looking at screen caps and see what other people have done/are doing

Check out Sgt Carida's GM build thread. I used a coverall pattern to make mine. IMO BDU pants won't work because you need to have the front come all the way up under the chest piece. It all looks to be one piece. Grey is what I went with for mine.
You also have the shirt to deal with. Do you go with black or grey? Hard to tell from the screen caps huh?

Rather than BDU's, you'll need an overall shape, like sgtcarida said. He's right about the shirt, too (IMO). It's really difficult to tell whether it's black or grey. Personally, I'm going to go for dark grey UnderArmor. At least that's where my head is at at this point. The color is real tricky, like apollo said. I took thse pics, in sunlight, of my Visual Dictionary with a couple fabric samlpes: And, of course, there's the infamous digital one: Screenshots are problematic, at best, for color reference. Last time I was on Mygeeto, the lighting was knida' nuts.

Yeah when I was there the last time my coveralls looked aquamagenta grey but who can tell with the lack of light and constant snow squals?!
I'm not decided on going with black or grey for my shirt. I like the idea of trying to match up with the coveralls but I also like the idea of being "different" and going with black on top.

Well, I have studied that part of the film for many hours. I stand firm that the under-shirt is grey, the same if not similar color to the pants. The gloves also apear to be grey. I am going to try separate pants and shirt to start with. The thick belt should cover the area between and break it up so that if the shirt and pants are not an exact match, it will not be obvious. I am sure you experienced costumers will find some kind of fault in this, but I am new and need to spread my wings and try it myself. Sometimes the lessons we learn through failure are the most profound.
Right now I am stuck in the boot/shin area.

Once I finish my coveralls I'll post pics of them for all to see. If there is interest I MIGHT do a small run. I am NOT a professional seamstress by any means but can work a sewing machine pretty well.
I hear you on the lessons learned Vod. I'm slowly working on the toe armor, again. I'm going to get some pics to GF and see what he thinks of my new idea. If it is a go I'll post pics of what I used. Don't worry we'll figure it out on the toe armor.

I think I might have had a breakthrough in the toe area. I will finish up on boot tonight and post some pics.
