Elsewhere in the forum, the issue of the GM's apparent "padded groin" came up, and I figured I'd go ahead and start a discussion for it here, since this is where it belongs. These two images, Sith Snapshot #2 and a screencap, show this padded groin area. Now, elsewhere in the forum, where this discussion started up, it was suggested that this could be a codpiece that is under the pants, or a cup or some sort. But what about an actually-padded groin section? The idea came to me a few days ago. I've been working on my new Scout Trooper cumberbund (which is now finished), and if you're not aware, the entire cumberbund is padded with batting. Doing some research on it, I came upon this thread on BikerScout.net: www.bikerscout.net/Forum/index.php?showtopic=1046It suggests the use of fusible interfacing in conjunction with ironing to produce a relatively stiff groin flap for the TB cumberbund. The results are quite impressive. So I got to thinking, we have two profound uses of some sort of padding to produce a puffed up and "stiff" area in a garment: batting and fusible interfacing. Why not combine the two? The fusible interfacing is typically used in shirt collars to make them stiffer, so it won't actually pad the are in question, but if you put a layer of batting in front of it, voila: stiff padded groin area that can be sewn in. I'm going to try this on my new undersuit. It eliminates the need for a bulky and uncomfortable codpiece underneith, which of course means less layers.

I really like this idea captain...When I brought up the subject the other day, I wasn't saying that we should do specifically armor (as in FG or polystyrene/plastic) just SOMETHING...I like the padding idea because it would make it look like it's A PART of the suit not just an add-on piece, because the two shots that you have posted here that in my opinion pretty clearly show this piece, are UNDER the suit which makes me think that it IS a part of the suit (suit as in the undersuit)... You could shape the padding for it to look correct and it wouldn't make things "uncomfortable" ( ) for us guys if you know what I mean...

Hey I don't want to dampen your guyses spirit but I beleive that this "peice" is an uneeded one and we can't even prove that it is there. Now don't get me wrong I will still chip in my ideas and help out but I am not going to do one that is all I am saying.

That is a decidedly negative statement. We're here to research, not throw research out the window. We're here to prove, not to say we can't prove.
I think all the proof we need is the uniformity in the clone models. If it's appearing on more than one of them, in the same place, with the same shape, then we can assume it's there. Can you back up your claim that "we can't prove it's there"? Because I can spot it even on that GM to the far left of the screenshot, even though it's mostly in shadow.
Of course, it wouldn't hold anyone back from 501st membership if that person doesn't put it on their suit, but you can probably consider it to be something along the lines of the leather finger tops on a Biker Scout glove, or some small, hardly noticeable detail like that. Anyone who adds it will only add that much more flare to their costume. If you don't have the knowhow to put it there, or just don't feel like adding it (like you), I wouldn't worry about it. It's not really a big deal - It's a minor detail that won't make or break the costume.
Those of us that believe it is there are going to continue to do the research.

I definatly see some kind of padding there, and will be adding this to my suit once we figure out as much as we can about it.
I like Captains suggestion of the padding/fusible interfacing combo. I've never used the fusible interlacing, but I've had some experience working with batting for a padded look on my Mando's vest shoulder flaps. Maybe even having it detatchable incase you don't like it, but need it for more cannon events?
And Anrev, LOL!

You know, that gets me thinking. If you want it removable, for sitting for example, you can simply make a pocket on the inside of it that is the shape of the insert.

I definatly like that idea. A pocket sounds like the best way.

Hey I really did not mean it to be negative I was just giving my 2 cents. I really was not trying to be negative infact I will even help this topic along to show my remorse for in a little way being negative.
My opinion is that you should use the batting and I really like the idea of the pocket I will start on a patern that I will post on how to make these if this will help.

I don't know what batting is, but I personally think the pocket idea is a good one...Again, the culmination of everyone's mind prevails again...(laughs like a mad scientist)bwuhahahaha... Anywho, I was thinking about something on the drive to work this morning...If you look at the shape of "that" armor piece or padding (I'm talking about what the canon "would" be...) it is NOT a straight shape...It kind of tapers a LITTLE...It almost makes me wonder if they have the pelvic/butt armor from a standard TC trooper on UNDERNEATH the cloth goods...Again, this is just speculation of what "real" GM's may have...(As for us nonILM real life GM's, I am still for the pocket padding)...But I just think it kind of has that shape to it...I can't seem to find a good pic of a regular TC so if anyone has one I think I can show what I mean...I do like to think and speculate about things like this...Problem is, we may never know what is really underneath the cloth goods, because I don't see a GM in an adult film any time soon...

If you know what's inside of a quilt, you know what batting is. It's a very light, fluffy, padding, just in thin sheets.
Yeah, I see the taper too. It seems like it's wider at the top, and thins out toward the bottom, almost with a rounded shape at the bottom.
I'm gonna join the camp that doesn't think there is a TC codpiece underneith. My reasoning is that there is no raised section on the TC codpiece that matches this shape we see on the GM. Aside from the little wedge-shaped panel line indentations on the codpiece, it's actually very flat, no raised sections that would produce this shape at all. So I'm gonna stay away from that idea for now.

I'll agree with that...I was just throwing that random idea that popped into my head out there...It can only lead to discussion which logically will only get us closer to the truth...I was just saying that I saw a resemblance to the TC cod piece shape and the groin padding on the GM...I'm non denying that I said it, but I guess (as usual) my thoughts some how always come out not quite what I mean...oh well...Point is, I agree cap'n.

Im not going to add anything to mine. IMHO it will turn into the dreaded TB camel toe. I have enough problems with that on my TB. I dont want it on this one too.

Well, the way the references look, it's only on the front of the groin. Like the little flap on your jeans that covers the zipper. It doesn't appear to tuck under the groin like the TB cumberbund flap, so I don't think you should have any camel toe issues with it.

I know how to achieve your idea of a soft flexible cod peice and have it have a shape to it. I was looking on the interent and I found a site that talks about thermoforming adhesives. Basically it is a process of making armor out of hot glue. It is flexibe not so much soft but you could only make the shell and then put some sort of padding on the inside of it so it would kinda be like and athletic cup.
